Nun Better Cookies & Baseball

The CBS Sunday Morning show on April 18th aired a news story called, "A Good Habit" featuring Sister Mary Assumpta from The Sisters of the Holy Spirit of the Jennings Center for Older Adults located in Cleveland, Ohio.

So why am I typing that bit of information? Well Sister Mary Assumpta is a cousin somehow removed and get to see every now and then. She'll be seeing Mom and Janet over at Eagle Crest this summer when they are all there for the Annual Quilt show. Which if you have never seen is something to be sure.

Anywho, in the picture above our cousin is the one on the far left at a Cleveland Indian's game. She makes cookies for the team and over the years started selling them and is you click through the link above you will see she is the only nun to be on a baseball card. But this is not just about her, but rather about the Order of which she is a member.

Beyond their devoted work with the community, these women are known for their Nun Better Cookies. The kitchens are warming up, as the Sisters of the Holy Spirit prepares for their annual tradition, baking nearly two tons of cookies.

The sisters started baking these so-called Nun Better cookies back in the 1980s when the Cleveland Indians baseball team was in a slump. The sisters thought it would be a good luck charm for them. In 2001, the sisters baked the Nun Better Cookies for donors, and in 2002 started selling cookies to the public. Each year the orders have doubled, and last year's total was over one ton of cookies. The ultimate goal is to make enough money to support the endowment for the Jennings Center for Older Adults' Campus for Senior Services. So there you go and if you Google Nun Better you can find the form or through the hot link above. Cheers!
